Meet the dentists
Dr. Heff’s Remarkable Mints were invented and developed by Dr. Mike Heffernan and Dr. Toby Edwards-Lunn (pictured right), two practising dentists from the south of England who both graduated from Guy’s Hospital in London.
Mike is a specialist dentist who has won awards for his research in the United States and Toby is a partner in a successful general practice in Eastbourne. Both are passionate about finding ways to bring tooth care out of the bathroom (and the dentist’s surgery) so that people can look after their teeth wherever they are and whatever they’re doing.
The big idea
The idea for Dr. Heff’s mints came in a rare flash of inspiration at a dental conference in London, when Toby and Mike discovered by chance that they were both trying to solve one of dentistry’s great dilemmas: how can dentists help their patients combat tooth decay as it occurs throughout the day.
Although there is already a significant body of scientific research on the benefits of Xylitol, they felt they could do better – and invent a new mint that was truly remarkable!
Winning the battle vs tooth decay
As dentists, we’re always looking to help our patients improve their smile. With over 40 years’ experience between us, we know that tooth decay is still a major health problem, which causes eating difficulties and bad breath, as well as damaging people’s confidence. Newspaper headlines offer frequent warnings about the excessive levels of sugar in modern diets and the misery suffered by children when they require tooth extractions because of decay. Of course, tooth decay affects older generations too. As our gums recede as we grow older, the roots of the teeth are gradually exposed, making them prone to rapid decay – which is now the number one reason for loss of teeth in the over 65s.
Meanwhile many people’s teeth are having the layers of enamel and dentine stripped away by acid erosion, which is caused by, among other things, drinking fizzy drinks, fruit juices and smoothies. It’s a tough old time for teeth – and so the perfect moment for Dr. Heff’s Remarkable Mints!
Stop the rot!
As dentists, we believe that prevention is the key to having clean and healthy teeth – and our message is that people’s dental health is ultimately in their hands, not their dentist’s.
The life choices we all make about smoking, diet and oral hygiene ultimately determine the health of our teeth. Because people’s lifestyle and habits really matter in dentistry. The most important diseases that dentists commonly treat – including caries, gum disease and erosion – are all preventable. This is why we invented Dr. Heff’s Remarkable Mints: our mints will help to reduce the number of dental treatments that people need, saving everyone precious time and money.
Making a truly Remarkable Mint
After four years of refining our formula and perfecting the taste, we were ready to start producing Dr. Heff’s Remarkable Mints.
We do this in Canada – with the help of one of the world’s leading manufacturers of mints – to ensure that Dr. Heff’s mints always taste fantastic and are produced to the highest international standards.
Because we are professional dentists with a background in science, we wanted to ensure that Dr. Heff’s mints were thoroughly tested in laboratory conditions to prove they were truly effective in combating tooth decay.
To do this, we have carried out successful scientific studies at the Dental School of the University of Illinois, the University of Zurich and the University of Brighton, and also sought input and advice from the leading figures in dental research and education.
